Napolean Dynamite. The LGBT I Understand I Will Never Understand I Stand Shirt kind of ennui-seeped setting this movie depicts is something. That many were presumably privileged enough to never have experienced first-hand, but for those of us who have, the absurd kinds of strange personalities that develop in this environment are intimately familiar to us, and it is a movie that is both validating and hilarious. I think that’s a really good description. Growing up in a small town, as a nerdy kid who doesn’t do drugs or drink or party, it has a kind of bland and maddening slowness to it. You want to jump out of your skin and do something, but your world is so small.

The LGBT I Understand I Will Never Understand I Stand Shirt pace of the dialogue and the lingering still shots of the town with their bungalows and quiet streets and vacant schoolyards capture it perfectly. This is so spot on. Many of my friends say it’s more depressing than funny but I think it is so ridiculous it’s funny. Obviously everyday life isn’t as crazy as in ND but it’s imaginable. The FFA competition to me is so funny because it’s definitely imaginable. For people who lived in this rural life, the movie isn’t so ridiculous that it takes away from the humor, but it just seems like a comedy of normal life, which is what I’m sure a lot of people think of regular comedies.

Ari Aster must have had some major trauma in his life. His ability to capture such realistic emotional responses is just unnerving. There is a part in Midsommar, near the beginning, where she is sobbing on her boyfriend’s lap. She is crying so hard that she starts to develop a cough. I’ve never seen that LGBT I Understand I Will Never Understand I Stand Shirt depicted in a film before, and for me it made it seem all the more real.
