Big companies use blasting tech and giant machinery to move tons and tons of rock in open-pit mines. Environmental ethics aside, they do this for efficiency. There is NO use of artisan miners for them. Honestly, it doesn’t matter how cheap they might be, a guy with a pickaxe in a hole that belongs to. Although this is subject to change, I dunno, a lot has changed at a cobalt mine. I’m familiar with the DRC since the Chinese takeover last year. And these are next to impossible for the large mining companies, or the tech companies to have any sort of authority to stop. Nor is it their responsibility.

I dislike this article. Not because I disagree that tech companies should have a responsibility to try to source ethical components, but because it implies that this horrible situation is somehow exacerbated by their complacency, which I disagree with. The problem is that the internal corruption in the DRC allows mostly Chinese middlemen to pad some pockets to start their own “refineries” (using toxic chemicals that leech directly into the earth) and have a setup to funnel that in with officially mined channels of minerals. These are the ones who are funding and perpetuating artisanal miners.
